Faulting

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Faulting at joints in a jointed pavement is the result of erosion and pumping of the subbase and signifies excessive movement of fines at the interface between subbase and slab. Once faulting is occurring the damage has already been done and very little can be done to reduce it except to improve riding quality by grinding down the “steps” on the surface of the pavement. At this time faulting in excess of 5 mm is regarded as undesirable.
