Skewness

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Skewness of a distribution is usually expressed in terms of the Coefficient of Skewness (CoSk), which normally (but not always) assumes values from -1 to +1.

Asymmetric distributions with a long upper tail are said to be positively skewed, with CoSk > 0. Distributions with a long tail on the left are negatively skewed, their CoSk < 0. Symmetrical distributions have CoSk = 0.

The CoSk for an axle load distribution is calculated and shown, together with the mean and standard deviation, in the footnote below the graph shown on the Axle Loads Page.
